We've been very lucky to have a car that is completely paid for.
April purchased our Toyota Camry back in 2000 and it's still running today (but more on that later). It is a 1996 and has 158,000 miles on it, is beat up, rusted, dented, scratched and overall a perfect vehicle to park in a mall parking lot 5 days a week without any care as to its safety.
Last week the driver's side window controls stopped working. I crudely took off the door frame and rigged it so the window would stay up (rigged = some wire, plastic wraps and prayer) and we took it to the repair shop, just to see what it would cost to fix.
We should have known our luck was bound to run out some time.
Along with the repairs to the window motor, they found several other things that were wrong with important-sounding parts like "axle" and "water pump" and "master control switch." Not being a car guy, I have to assume these are real items that you probably need to run a car unless you are Fred Flinstone. Total pricetag? Around $3,600.
So, like any responsible car owner, we're taking it to a second place to see if it can be done cheaper. We're at that critical point where it may not be worth fixing and that money would be better spent on a newer car, or maybe just paying a really strong guy to carry me to/from work every day.
